What Are The Different Kinds of Child Access?

The right to access the child is an inherent right of the parents and the children have a right to access both parents. This right can only be denied under very limited circumstances.

Fixed Access

This arrangement sets out specified and detailed schedules and it is also known as “Specified Access”. This means that the children live mainly with one parent, but the parents decide on access to the child during holidays, long weekends, birthdays and religious events.

Reasonable Access

This parenting arrangement has flexible schedules as agreed by both parents. It is also known as “liberal and generous access.” The parents can re-arrange the access schedules depending on the change in situations.

Supervised Access

The visiting parent will be supervised by a friend, relative or social worker from the Children’s Aid Society. The Court orders supervision due to traits of abuse/alcoholism/ drug abuse. In these cases, sometimes the Government may administer the supervised access program.

Denied Access

This means that one parent will only be allowed to see the child under extreme occasions. Courts will deny access to a parent if it finds there is a serious threat to the safety of the child.
