The Full Cost of Mediation

The cost of divorce mediation is not determined solely by the hourly rate of the mediator.

Not all Family Mediation is the Same

A number of factors contribute to the cost of a family mediation process. Certainly there is the competency, skill level and experience of the mediator, services provided by the divorce mediator, and thoroughness of the mediator’s process. But there are additional costs and factors that need to be taken into consideration.

The Characteristics of a Godd Mediator

There are four characteristics an experienced and competent mediator must possess:

  1. The ability to expertly guide a divorcing couple through complex negotiations while remaining neutral at all times;
  2. The ability to create numerous negotiation options for the parties to discuss and consider based on the mediator’s experience with a variety of other similar similar families;
  3. A command of the complex financial matters surrounding divorce;
  4. Ability to remain current on the issues that may impact a couple’s divorce settlement.

Professional Background

Family Mediators can come from a number of professional backgrounds. They may come from a legal background, a therapeutic background (social worker/counselor) or even a financial background. All will have very different skill sets, expertise and rates.

Unmentioned Extra Costs

Make sure you ask about the total cost of the mediated process.  Does the price include financial disclosure, independent legal advice or a separation agreement?
